Not all Christians think the same way. . .

It's taken me a while to understand that. Not all Christians are Baptists - or Republicans. Not all Christians celebrate Christmas. Not all Christians watch Fox News or think that the world is going to end in our lifetime. I had to step outside my comfort zone (pardon the plagiarism Casting Crowns) in order to see this more clearly. (Perhaps not so) strangely enough I find myself changing into a different person as a result. This journal is not intended to attract arguments. This journal is my way of clearly laying out the things I've come to believe.

Q&A

Instead of a cheesy “about me” page I’ve decided to be a little more practical. Below you will find a long and growing list of questions that fall into one of several categories:

  • Questions I am regularly asked
  • Questions I wish I were regularly asked
  • Questions that Christians should be asking everyone they meet
  • Questions that people are either too afraid or too polite to ask
  • Questions that are unnecessary for anything other than scenarios like this

Here we go. . .

What do you do for a living?

I’m a web designer and developer for a small internet marketing company in Greenville, SC.

How do you like that?

I love it. I’m in a place that lets me explore different realms of creativity. I can easily get bored if I’m doing the same thing day after day. At my job I’m given a wide spectrum of projects and almost always free reign to complete the project the way I see fit.

Is that what you want to do for the rest of your career?

Short answer: I have no idea. It’s what I want to do now and that’s the important thing. God has given me the ability to do many things and I hope to never be too afraid to take a leap of faith and start over with something new

Do you go to church anywhere?

YES! I’m a member at Greenville Presbyterian Church and you are always invited. We belong to the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) and we are one of 5 (and counting) congregations in North America. I’ve never been happier than I am at GPC.

Have you always been a member at a Presbyterian church?

No. Until my wife and I joined GPC in June 2009 I had always been joined with a Baptist church.

That’s a big jump from Baptist to Reformed Presbyterian. How did that come about?

By God’s providence, of course! In short, God brought me halfway to reformed over the course of about four years (all while I was attending Bob Jones University) and the rest of the way when I started courting my future wife. The transition was the result of the preaching at Heritage Bible Church in Greer, SC and Greenville Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC as well as several well written theological works by John Piper, Douglas Wilson, Robert Booth, R.C. Sproul, J.I. Packer and Kenneth Gentry to name a few.

Was it a hard transition to make?

Yes and no. It is always a very hard thing to change (in some way or another) almost everything you were taught as a child. Sometimes I felt as if I were forsaking my heritage. That was the most difficult part of the transition. But all along the way I had the Holy Spirit talking to me, encouraging me, and leading me. Following God is difficult as long as you are holding on to earthly things, but once you let go it is the easiest thing in the world.

You said half the transition took place while you were attending Bob Jones University. Did you graduate from BJU? Did they teach you reformed theology?

I attended BJU for three and a half years. I graduated in 2009 with a degree in Graphic Design. Bob Jones University is a non-denominational school but there is no question of their stance on reformed theology. BJU is (in practice) a fundamental, Baptist, dispensationalist institution and by definition I do not fit into any of those categories anymore. BJU was very kind to me while I was there and I have nothing negative to say from personal experience; however, the learning that I did (regarding reformed theology) at BJU was all done outside of the classrooms (and many times away from the campus).

What about before the university? What was your schooling like growing up?

I was entirely educated in two different private Christian schools (both Baptist). In both cases the school was a ministry of the church my family attended. I feel like I was adequately educated at both of those schools. I am still very thankful for my years there.
